SUNDAY MARKET
-case study-
Sunday Market is a thrifting app that allows users to discover and catalog their favorite second-hand shops and local garage sales.
So what's the problem?
Users are looking for ways to find thrifting opportunities in their community.
What is the solution?
Design an app for Sunday Market that allows users to discover local thrift stores and sales.
What's my role?
I am the UX Designer responsible for conducting interviews, paper and digital wireframing, low and high-fidelity prototyping, conducting usability studies, accounting for accessibility, and iterating on designs.
Understanding the Users
Through the creation of empathy maps and competitive audits, I was able to understand the user group for Sunday Market. Research confirmed initial assumptions about the Sunday Market app and revealed the need for a ‘sale creation’ page so individuals could market their own yard or estate sales.
Conducting a Competitive Audit
The Pain Points:
Pain Point #1
Online shopping trends make it difficult for consignment shops to advertise.

Pain Point #2
Many busy adults don’t look at local listings for estate or yard sales.

Pain Point #3
While traveling, people don’t often think to search for secondhand or antique items.

Creating User Personas
-Design Beginnings-
Paper Wireframes
By taking the time to hand draw each screen of the app, I was able to determine what elements needed to be transferred over to digital wireframes.

Digital Wireframes
Creating digital wireframes allowed for a cleaner visual for the app's overall design.
Low-fidelity prototype
Using my completed digital wireframes, I created a low-fidelity prototype. The primary user flow was finding and liking a local sale.

Usability Study
During an unmoderated usability study, 5 participants were asked to navigate the app. A System Usability Scale was then used to further understand the performance of the app. In addition to being curious about other aspects of the app, the participants often mentioned their preference for the ‘like’ button to be a heart.

-Refining the Design-
Mockups
Early designs were helpful in creating a basic layout, but many other design elements were added to help the users conceptualize using this app on a regular basis.

Before/After
After a second usability study was completed, several changes were made to the app's color palette to align with accessibility standards.

High-fidelity prototype
The final high-fidelity prototype for Sunday Market meets our user's need for an app that allows them to:
-search for local sales
-create and advertise their own estate or yard sale
-save lists of their favorite antique stores and second-hand shops

-Final Thoughts-
Impact
The Sunday Market App makes users feel confident in their ability to find local thrifting opportunities.
“I like how you can navigate through much of the app without using the menu; at the same time it isn't so many buttons as to be confusing” -Research Participant

Next Steps
The next step would be to do another round of research testing to determine if all pain points and accessibility concerns have been effectively addressed.
